VoIP Gateway

Has anyone implemented the voip gateway over an unmanaged WAN such as a VPN over the internet with success. I have a customer with two MICS sites opening a third branch. They are currently sharing data over the public network through a VPN which they intend on implementing at their new site. Should I consider offering the BCM instead. I have many MCK extenders installed and am unable to confince them to go this rout. Their main concern is to have local lines in each branch office if their internet goes down. They do not use nor do they have any intention of paying for point to point data/voice t-1's.
What they want to accomplish is being able to transfer calls between branches.
Your guidence will be appriciated

They might be best served with simple Centrex lines. The gateway will work, but over the interrnet there is little security and voice quality won't be great.

Thanx for the timely response. We plan on using VPN tunneling between the routers for security. Centrex is not an option since their offices are not in the same State.
Theoretically I agree with you that it should work. I was just wondering if anybody has an installation like this.

Based on what you are saying the VoIP Gateway sounds like a good fit. They can tie together and still have local loops or T1 service.

Depending on your budget, and the number of lines you need to be able to transfer, you might be able to look at something like a Sipura SP2000. These run about $120 a peice. This is a SIP device which provides 2 FXS ports. Although we don't have it deployed in this exact configuration, I belive you can do a SIP to SIP call directly between two of these devices. I have one tied to our Norstar as a Line pool. The quality of the call is excellent, you literally cannot tell that it is an IP call. As an FYI, Cisco and Lynksys license Sipura's technology for some of their VOIP equipment.

If you want to take the SIP route, I'd go with Mediatrix products instead of Sipura. Note that Mediatrix is a certified Nortel partner and their FXO/FXS SIP products are all officially certified for use with Norstar and M1/Succession equipment.

Another major plus, Mediatrix's technical and post-sales support is VERY good, whereas Sipura's support is practically nonexistant in the PBX/business telephony sector.

Yes, they're more expensive, but in the end it's a much better product -- isn't it why you bought from Nortel instead of anything else?
