my mgr was speaking to a vendor about voip and the vendor stated we needed to upgrade our cabling to cat5e. we currently have cat5 throughout..... is that a requireement? and benefits of 5e over 5 for voip? thansk!!!

vendor makes more money when you upgrade.. voip works just as well on cat 5.. 90 percent of the 1000's of ip phones we put in each year are on cat 5..

just tell them another vendor has said there is no need to upgrade the cabling and they'll soon change their tune.

Merry non denominational winter festival!!!

I agree. If you already have Cat 5, you're fine. You'd only need to upgrade to 5e if you wanted to run gigabit ethernet. Fast Ethernet will run just fine over Cat 5.

You didn't mention how it is terminated on each end. If you have true Cat 5 terminations on both ends, your good to go.

That's a good point. The Cat 5 designation applies to more than just the cables themselves. It also applies to the connectors and termination methods. The entire system must be rated Cat 5, not just the cables.

Cat5 is no longer being produced with the 5e now being the basic data cable.

If the old Cat5 is in good condition and is terminated correctly,it should work fine for your VOIP application.
