voicemail to email using embedded voicemail

I know this has been beat to death, but, I will installing a 500v2 8.0.44 with embedded voicemail. I have never been able to get it up and working. The customer does not have an exchange server, they just use a msn account? I am tring to set it using gmail. So I have it set to my network ip address and smtp is pointed to my desktop.....Is there a true and test, easy way to set this up? Basically this is for 1 user only. So far all I get on monitor trace is

No matter what I try it only come back as Send SMTP message not Sent.
Looking for a little help.

they need an email server for this to work, just pointing it to your PC is not going to send an email
