I have a 5.1 MM (2 mas and an mss). We currently have no expirations for user mailbox passwords. My question is if we flag this to 'on' and in 30 days in system config.. does the system automatically expire the passwords or does it wait 30 days after flagging it on?

in the older versions of MM if you enabled that after the fact it would immediately expire all passwords as the age of the passwords were not known because it wasn't enabled before to track them. I haven't tried doing that in later versions but I always steer customer away from doing that afterwards. My bottom line to them is - if you ever want to expire passwords you should do that from the beginning of the system going live. It will also confuse users were they never had to reset their passwords before after using them for years - training issue - but still a pain point.

Well unfortunately they are looking into security here and want this to be changed. I assumed the system would expire everything immediately, which is fine as long as you can communicate accurate information.

I am sure it will expire immediately.

But just FYI if you are going to force the users to change the passwords after x number of days you may want to consider the fact that some (most) users will now write the password down on or near the phone and this will make it much less secure than it is now.

This goes double if you make them change it every 30 days as it then becomes more difficult for the users to remember something that they are forced to change and then they are out of their comfort zone.

You can disagree all you want but i can tell you that if you do this i can break into almost all of your mailboxes if i were on site.

No disagreement.. It's just what is about to be happening here. I've gotten different information on once you flag the password expiry field in the vm configurator on the MAS if the passwords all immediately expire or will they wait the time you specify. 2 different AVAYA folks said the opposite of eachother.
