I had to re-use a current employees phone. He only works from home but needs voicemail still associated with his number 215-xxx-xxxx. I've already associate his phone with a new number and his ext is still in unity. I remember the number could still stay live going direct to vm. How is that done again?

Thanks all

You could try to build a new device with a dummy MAC address and assign the old DN to Line 1. Then check the VM box under the forwarding properties.

What version of CallManager are you using? if you do a routeplan report for unassigned numbers select his phone and make it active again. This will allow the number to be active without creating a phone.

create a CTI route port and assign the DN of the home user and forward it always to voice mail.

Thank you everybody for your help. I did indeed create a CTI device and all is well! Thanks again.:)

This probably will not be an issue for you as it is not an issue for most customers, however, be aware CTI ports do take device weights form the total device weights available to a server.

Making an unsassigned extension "active" does not.

Unfortunately most people do not take device weights into consideration when designing Cisco VoIP.
