After serious power outages (special thanks go to the city of atlanta construction team in front of our building) our voicemail is not working at all. I get "feature inactive" for all voicemail attempts (F981,F983,F986 etc..)

I checked the forum history. There is a recommendation for my case but I could not accomplish it completely (details below):...
My questions are:
1- How can I check if KSU can see the Star Talk Ports (All I know is the DN number of Startalk) Is there a menu for it?
2- Where is XFTEST? How can I remove the codes?
3- Is there a magic pill to recover the startalk?

Thank you,
Yinal.

jjung1,
1st check in Maint (if you can) to see whether the KSU can see the Star Talk Ports.
2nd power down the Star Talk
3rd do an XFTEST (pwd 266344) at the KSU and remove all the codes.
4th power down and then restart the KSU
5th power up the Star Talk.
6th get into F983 any old way you can. Sometimes you may have to do a F981* then enter the Admin mail box. One time I got administration from mbox 100. At that point once in, I completely reinstalled the whole default software and started again. Then thing has been running perfectly ever since.
If the Vmail coding got scrambled from a power bump or similar, then you may have to repeat steps 3-6 several times until you get in somewhere.

Good luck

Startalk Flash feature not active
Power down one more time, power up again. Let it run a good 5 minutes then try a F903 first. It should tell you your feature code range. Just say okay to it. Then do a F983. It might ask you for password instead of log. It is looking for 266344. Run through your configuration. Usually you just say ok or next to everything and let it set up.
Then you can do the normal feature 983 and log in as usual.
or Try F**XFTEST to see if the Feature codes are there. Then do F 9*1 or F903.

I powered down everything.. Cleared the codes @ XFTEST.. Rebooted.. Nope.. F903-->Feature Inactive , F983 --> Feature Inactive

Any other recommnendations?

yinal.

Whenever this has happened to me, I have never gone into XFTEST and removed anything. But.....
I would be powering down, up WAITING 5 minutes then do F903 1ST!

To check the ports that it is plugged into, take a [hone and plug it into the jacks that the Flash is currently plugged into. See if the phone comes up. If it does the ports are good. OR

Feature ** 266344, 266344
Terminals and Sets - Press the lower right button that has lit up on your phone until you see
Maintenance - press the upper right button that has lit up on your phone. Press the lower right one until you see
Port /DN status - Press the upper right button
Show Port: ___ - Underneath this in the display you will se a button that says DN. Press that...
Show DN: ___ - Enter in the port of the vmail. (you can find this by doing F985)
Press Device and see if it says StarTalk.
Then I would press Disable and Re enable the port just for grins and giggles. MRoberts

I don't think you will be able to get the DN of the Flash by feature 9 8 5 since all the rest of the feature codes for the flash are not working. I suggest that you take a digital telephone to the flash and unplug the telephone line cord from the port on the flash labled "2" and plug it into your good telephone. then do feature * 0 "intercoom button" and get the DN of the flash that way. plug it back into the flash, wait 2-3 minutes then follow the proceedures above to test if system sees the flash. F903 : Inactive Feature
F9*1: Inactive Feature
F98x: All of them are inactive
VMAIL PORT STATUS: Unequippped
I deleted the XFTEST CODEs but I had written them down if they are required..

It seems that voicemail system is gone should I call the for hardware maintenance?

Did you plug a phone into the jacks where the vmail goes? Does the phone come up? MRoberts

I took a digital phone to the systems room. Unplugged the cable @ port 2 .. I plugged the working set to the cable of port2 and it worked..Also the other port (number 4) worked as well. The power light is on and red on flashtalk.. O know the VMAIL DN number which is 251..

...

One last time, power it down, power it up, WAIT 5 minutes, then do the F903.
If it still pitches a fit, then I'm sorry but it is quite BROKE! ;-( MRoberts

it is possible that it may be just one of the voltages on the power supply, Do you have an ATA on your system, supposably both the ATA and Flash use the same power supply. JerryReeve

Yes all telephony devices are connected to same power supply. I connected startalk to a different power supply but nope, I stil get inactive feature for F903....
thank you..

Just for testing purposes. Move Startalk to different station port and reboot both phone system and Startalk.
Unplug from power wait 10 seconds, then power-up.After WAITING 5 minutes then do F903. If this doesn't work, I am sorry it is beyond me. Good Luck!!

How can I move Startalk to a different station port?

You would have to change the cross connection wires off of the port they are on presently, DN 252 Probably port 132 to another port available. as an alternative; If you just move the flash to say, your desk, and plug it in using your own phones location it would default your phone when it was done but you could test out what you are looking for there. Did you ever solve your problem, yozkan? I've got the exact same situation with my recently-installed Flash. I powered it down so I could put it on a UPS and it never could be found by the KSU again.

I tried all the steps noted above and nothing. I can get a phone (7310) on that DN (35, port 115) just fine, but reconnect Flash and it's 'inactive feature.' Tried new cables, different power source, connecting Flash to a different port and DN -- still just can't get the device to show up.

Anybody out there that might have conversed with yoz privately and helped him through this? I've searched and searched and this is the only and only reference I could Google up on this issue.

Many thanks for any pointers.

Jacy

i had this problem after I had someone pull the rom out of the flash, just do the f903 thing about 5 minutes aafter you power it on after shuting it off for a while. worked for me and i'm an idiot.

Yo Yozcan,
MR has it right. If the thing is not even showing up in DN/Port Status after multiple reboots, which it absolutely must to even hack into scrambled software, get some strawberry jam ... cause the thing is TOAST. Send it out for repair and save yourself a lot of time.

Well, the vendor promptly sent me a new Flash and guess what... still get 'inactive feature.' Too coincidental to be 2 bad Flashes in a row, especially since the first one worked fine for a good 10 days before dieing on its first power down.

Backing up just a bit... Both the KSU and Flash were working fine until I powered them both down (for the first time since their initial startup days earlier) to put them on a newly purchased UPS. Upon restart, I never could find the Flash again. The port works just fine equipped with a 7310, just can't see the Flash. I've checked and rechecked every single config option imaginable, rebooted numerous times, moved the Flash port and DN, moved it back, changed the power outlet, everything noted in the posts above and then some.

In poring over every page in the CICS install manual I noticed that F**config/config is not returning to me ALL available 'installer' options. Some of them, specifically, the ones that are greyed out as being installer-specific in the CICS Installation manual, do not appear.

[At one point early on I had a comm vendor in here for a bit to work on the old CICS (with a working Flash, BTW) in my other office, but he was poking around this one and I just wonder if he didn't go in and change the installer password so I couldn't get at those options. A little job security, perhaps, miffed because I picked up the new hardware on the Internet for 35% of what he'd quoted me? Whatever.]

Would there be anything in those install options that could have reset during the power down, that is now preventing my KSU from seeing the Flash?

If I attempt a F**startup and take everything back to the factory defaults, that'll take care of any password change, right? This is a small system and not much had been set up in the first place so I don't mind taking it back to square one if that would help. I think I can run through the program options in my sleep by this point <sigh>

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jacy7,
Ok some dumb thoughts here. Try attatching the 7310 to the same modular plug that the Flash is connected to.... likely too short so get an extention cord... test it first. If the 7310 doesn't come up then the mod plug would be a good candidate for the bin. If Startup works for you with the passwords you have then if you feel OK with it try it as nothing should be hurt. CICS are specialized computers and are so reliable that we forget this and usually assume that nothing goes wrong with them. Greyed areas as you are describing is not a usual symptom of a lesser password. A lesser password just doesn't show the options to begin with... so doing a startup sounds like a good idea.

Cheers

Did a startup last night and reprogrammed everything from scratch and still NO access to Flash -- always get inactive feature.

Here are all the steps I've tried, in no particular order (can't remember at this point):

- Tried a 7310 at the jack where Flash is connected and it works fine, I can connect to the device immediately
- Powered down the CICS and Flash numerous and consecutive times, waiting a minimum of 5 min for Flash to initialize before attempting to reach it
- Tried F**XFTEST and removed the original Flash codes
- Tried getting into F903/F983/F9whatever numerous times
- Tried a new RJ45 cord and new power cord, new power outlets, (off the UPS and directly into the wall) etc.
- Moved the Flash DN from 35 to 22 and changed appropriate programming; moved back to 35
- Moved the Flash physically off the wall and to another station
- Still with the original Flash unit, had a local communications vendor come out and after about 20 minutes he Dx'd a bad Flash; wasn't alongside him to see what he tried but I can't imagine it was much different than what I've done
- Tried an entirely new Flash unit (vendor overnighted it) with all of the above, and still get exact same behavior
- Tried F**startup and reprogrammed the CICS from the get-go

Recalling that the original Flash unit worked without a hitch for several days, I don't believe version compatibility is a problem. The replacement Flash is identical to the original.

In retrospect, what 'seemed' to trigger this is the addition of a UPS. Everything was working fine plugged directly into the wall, then I powered down to plug both the CICS and Flash into a new UPS and the Flash has never been able to be seen again. Regardless of what I do, the CICS simply cannot see the Flash device at any port.

I'm no electrical engineer so please don't laugh, but is there any way possible the UPS could be throwing some bad voltage out, that the Flash can't handle? I did try plugging both the old and new Flash into the wall, but if the new one was plugged into the UPS first could the UPS have 'blown' the Flash somewhow and now it (they) won't work even when plugged straight to the wall? In hindsight I suppose I should have plugged the new one directly into the wall first.
