Hi can anyone explain to me why there is an acceptable level of packet loss on VOIP?

surely if a packet is dropped then voice is lost?

hope someone can help a pleb understand this...

We recently did a Webinar with Fluke Networks. They stated that there should be no more than 2% packet loss with voice or the it will become noticeable to a person.

Since Voice Packets use UDP versus TCP, lost packets are not re-transmitted.

Think of it like viewing a movie in a theater. What you see is actually 24 frames (pictures) per second. If you removed 1 frame per second the average movie goer would not notice.

The same appies to voice. The average packet size is dependant on your network but typically under 4k. the average voice comunication is 100K/sec. remove 1 packet/s and the average user will not notice.

There is an island of opportunity in the middle of every difficulty.
Miss that though, and you're pretty much doomed!
