Greetings! I have a Magix system I want to administer remotely. I have a VPN built to the site, but I can not get the admin program to work. Do I need to open a port in the router to use the admin program?

Step 1 in using the ADMIN PROGRAM through a NETWORK is to define the NETWORK ADDRESS the Merlin Messaging is to use.

This is done by connecting to the serial port on the Messaging and changing that address from the default to the network address it will be connected to.

Did that , Merlinman. I can ping the address of the Messaging Module when I am local. From the other side of the VPN, I get no response. I can ping all the machines in the Messaging subnet except the Messaging from the VPN tunnel. ANy ideas?

Can you ping messaging from the local subnet? Really it sounds like the ipaddress is not quite correct in the messaging unit. Did you use the crossover connector that comes with messaging?

Cargoski,

I can ping forever. I used the serial admin port to configure the Messaging.

I would swap ports in the router and see if that makes a difference.

Even I (the NON-NETWORK GUY) am able to connect my Merlin Messaging and do admin.

That being said, you must be missing something simple.

But again, as I said, I am not a network person.

Did you try it without the VPN remotely? Some VPN configurations can be difficult depending on software and routers.

?? are you using the correct Merlin Messaging admin program for your specific MM release. There are four (4)different programs and each is specific to a release version. An R2 will not work on a R4, R4 will not work on an R2, etc, etc! The different versions are available for download from support.avaya.com !!

I believe that my ability to ping the Merlin Messaging from inside ( locally ) and inability to ping the Messaging from the VPN tunnel is telling me I have network problem.

MerlinMAn, how is yours set-up? DO you access the your client using a VPN or do you open a port thru the firewall?

I have installed the Messaging Admin program on a local machine that I can RDP to via the VPN tunnel for now.

Is therre a port that the Messaging Admin program uses?

This has nothing to do with the Messaging, this is completely a network issue.

From the remote LAN, can you ping other devices on that subnet? If not, your router is not routing between the 2 subnets.

There are no ports to open, as you are creating a VPN tunnel, a tunnel is completely open, no ports being blocked.

I can ping other devices on the remote subnet but not the Messaging. I looked at the router logs when I ping the Messaging, and the local router shows me pinging normally to the destination IP address. The logs from the remote router show my ping request coming from the WAN and rejects the ping request, but only when I ping the Messaging. Any ideas?

Unless there is some major reason to use the Messaging Administration Software - most remote programming changes to a voicemail system are done by simply calling the system and dialing into the Administrator's Mailbox. If the changes are minor - this takes no more than a few minutes at most - and requires no elaborate setup.
