I have a customer that has a merlin legend that was upgraded to a magix release 2.0 processor and merlin messaging.

Every once in a while the customer calls me, and the voice mail has defaulted. I've been keeping a back up file in the voice mail, which I restore any time this happens.

I thought it was a battery problem on the messaging. So I put a new voice mail in. Still happens?? I can't figure out why??

THanks,

This sounds rather strange.

I would look at the error log and see if any power outages have been seen.

Other than that, or sabotage, I have no idea why 2 would fail the same way.

All of the PROGRAMMING is in the HARD DRIVE, and unless something happens, it should not FORGET.

That's what I thought. The voice mail is all defaulted and sometimes the back up isn't even there.

It's stumping me, and my customer is not happy with this. Is there any way to block the sabotage? Block back doors?

Thanks,

Well, there in lies the problem.

The latest Messaging product has a very secure backdoor password.

As I understand it, this was implemented because a disgruntled employee hacked into some clients voice mail, and did that very thing.

But, that means the earlier ones are not so secure.

I have this suggestion:

Get it all programmed like you want it, and do not 1 BUT 2 Restore processes.

The first one to the BACK UP PCMCIA Card.

The second one, using the MESSAGING SOFTWARE to a Hard Drive and or a Floppy drive.

THEN, have the client REMOVE THE PCMCIA CARD.

That way, if the bad guy strikes again, you have not 1, but 2 back ups. (With Back Up 2 having ALL THINGS in the Messaging)

Of course, the best thing to do is catch this dirty dratsab in the act and go after him with all the force of law.

After all, Audix Annie (the voice of Merlin Mail, Merlin Messaging & AUCIX) warns any and all "This service is restricted to authorized.... unauthorized ... is a VIOLATION OF THE LAW!

GOOD LUCK!

Whoa - you can't remove the PCMCIA card, cause that's also the port license card - but still a good idea to back it up to your hard drive.

Another thing to try if your are using a default password (say 123456) or the same password as the old card, is to change the password...and don't tell anyone what it is. If it's a disgruntled employee, I doubt they would know Avaya's backdoor pw. You didn't mention what release MM you have?

Well, TTT is right, but it will work as a 2 port unit without it.

So, no, that's not such a good idea.

It's been my experience that without the card installed, the Messaging will answer with "system is in test mode" and won't let you do anything. Had a customer one day decide to take out the card and put it in her desk drawer for "safekeeping", then wondered why the VM stopped working.

Well, Although I haved programmed all versions, the one I have in my system is an R1, and will work w/o the card.

I do seem to recall that R2 and later had a change.

The R2.0 going forward requires at least a 2-port card installed - or it stays in test mode. The R1 and R1.1 will work with 2-ports without a card as merlinman stated.

Thanks everyone. I'm really stumped. I think it's a hacker too.
There's no way it's the voice mail, right? No possible way? I'd hate it to be the voice mail and I look like an idiot.

Thanks,

KILLBOX

When you replaced the voice mail - was it with another R2 module - or did you get an R2.5? If you got the R2.5 - it is upgradeable to R4 - and the much more secure "backdoor" merlinman talked about.
