Vodavi SMDR setup

Hello, we have the vodavi 3500 and I want to enable smdr features. Tried to plug in 9 pin and connect to pc, but nothing to pc. System installed 5 years ago and am guessing tech did not enable to smdr feature. How can I do this?

Also, have a 9 pin to USB cord with software to emulate, any issues with this setup? This is on laptop, pc has 2 female 9 pins ends with gender changer.
