Good Afternoon Everyone,

I'm an attorney and I work in a law firm that has had a Vodavi phone system since around 1993. I've been here for about 4 years. In that time, we've migrated from our old carrier over to Comcast and everything has worked well. However, in my time here, I've ascended to "tech guy" for the office (basically by virtue of being 15-20 years younger than everyone else).

When our office was built out, our Vodavi system was installed and cat-5 and phone lines were run to various spots around the building. I've managed to figure out what handset location we have and what it's station ID is. However, when I plug a phone into the jack and the phone boots up, for some reason all of our external lines are in the incorrect quick buttons.

With the help of your forums, I've managed to assign many of the buttons on the phone to the correct codes, however, I can't figure out how to assign our external lines to the appropriate programmable keys. Whenever I pick up one of the lines, it simply shows the outgoing number, not any sort of internal line ID code that would give me a hint.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd sincerely appreciate it. I've been all through the forums and a number of the online manuals that have been scanned in and I'm coming up empty after hours of trying. I suspect (without knowing for certain) that the people who set our system up in the first place wouldn't have any idea what I was talking about because it was 20+ years ago.

I appreciate any help that you all can give me. Thanks ahead of time.

Ben

Hi Ben,
Outside lines are assigned to buttons from administrative programming, can't be done at the user level. The exact programming depends on WHICH Vodavi you have. Most likely, the programming will be in Flash 50 of admin programming. Determine which system you have (likely Starplus something), then find the manual on line - they're readily available. Many older systems must be programmed from X100. Good luck.

Thanks for the help mforrence. I was close, but the menu structure was a little over my head without more substantial documentation. I didn't have the ability to go through the whole system and figure out where the CO lines were assigned. As a result, I was unable to assign them properly. Here's a short write up (skipping some steps that seemed obvious to me after reading up on the phone system for a few hours) to help anyone who has something similar in the future:

Update because I hate when people solve tech problems and then don't report back for future people:

1) Go to the "Attendant" phone. (Which was what they essentially called the admin phone on the Vodavi system)
2) On the attendant phone, we were able to pull up which "CO lines" were assigned to which outside line. It was 01CO01 all the way up through 04CO04, but then line five was assigned to line 7, "05CO07". To assign the lines, once we were in the proper menu I had to type "01101" to assign our first outside line to the first flexible button.
3) After assigning the lines properly from the attendant station. I cleared the remainder of the buttons by typing in the button number and hitting 0 and then hitting hold. ie ""120hold" would clear button 12 of any assignments.
4) I then went back to the station in question, tested all the lines and it worked perfectly. I went through and assigned the station short cut keys to other extensions and I was done. Easy peasy.
5) A big thanks to Interconnect Services here in Maryland for walking me through it. Turns out they had all our info 20 years after the install and only made a little bit of fun of us for having such an old system.

For the record, when we do eventually upgrade our phone system, we'll be hiring them. Thanks for your help here! Great forum with lots of info.
