VNC VIEWER--Browinish Grey Screen @ user login--root is OK

HI,

I am a newbie to linux. I am able to see my see my remote system just fine when I start a vncserver in root and login in but when I try to login under my user account I get a brownish grey screen with a big X on it; no icons; no nothing. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.
