I am trying to access my home machine using vnc. I have a dynamic IP so am running a dynamic IP > DNS update util in conjunction with no-ip.com.

My problem is that norton personal firewall will ot let me in. Any ideas? I cant ping my domain name either (again due to norton of course).

I disabled the firewall (briefly of course) and it works fine...........

Can i use norton or do i need a better firewall?? If so, which one???

Do you have the correct ports open on the firewall? I believe that VNC uses 5900 and 5800, with an additional port opening in a one-up fashion for each connection that is established simultaneously.

So 5800 is open for VNC client attachment, and 5801 is required for the first display. Then 5802 for the second display.

By the same token, 5900 is open for HTTP requests, with 5901 being the first display, and 5902 being the second display.

Make sure that the series of ports that you require are open in the firewall. It has been a long time since I used VNC, so my memory of the actual use may be distorted.

Good luck!

Ive sorted it! Went home at lunch and there was a nice message asking me if I wanted to allow inbound access to vncserver32.

Thanks for the help tho as I wasnt aware of the necessary ports. Can you reccomend any other remote access software that is better than vnc?????

Most is better than VNC, but it all costs money. pc Anywhere by Symantec and Laplink both make a pretty good remote control package. Citrix is one of the market leaders, and there are several that are now web based. I personally fear running any form of remote control, and have only used VNC when I could tunnel it over ssh. A lot of overhead, but I feel a lot more secure.
