I installed a VM with a 8GB HDD which is now out of space. This is just a test to install Dell/Symantec management tools.

I ran vmware-vdiskmanager -x 30GB "E:\Virtual Machines\Virtual Machine 2003\Virtual Machine 2003.vmdk"

So now there is 22GB unallocated.
Now how do I resize the system partition? I set the disk from basic to dynamic but being a system/boot volume it cannot be extended.

I usually just a use a utility called G-Parted. It is open source. Upload it to the datastore and boot the vm from it. It is a really simple process.

Also if it is Esxi then you need to set the vm to boot into to the bios the next and make sure the vm is set to be able to boot to a cd.
