VMware on "desktop" versus "server" 1

I have recently purchased a server (HP ProLiant DL380, 8GB Ram, SAS hard drives, dual quad core xeon processors, etc.) and vmware esx.

I have only really ever used vmware on "desktop" machines, so I am not sure if there are any gotcha's that I am not aware of. That is, I have created a guest instance on my local machine, and copied the instance to another machine (with different hardware, but similar calibre) without any problems.

I would like to install the free vmware server on my local desktop machine, create a guest instance of windows 2003 server, test it, make sure it has all of the software I need, and then copy it up to the server.

Is this going to work the same way as if I had copied a guest instance from one "desktop" machine to another? I am not sure if vmware will deal with the completely different hardware, or whether it will work seamlessly (to clarify, my desktop has a core 2 duo processor).

Any help is appreciated.
