I have a Linux O/S server running on VMware player on my laptop however, only when I physically connect my LAN port of laptop to a network (doesn't matter what address is given) will it communicate with the Linux server - any ideas how to allow without a physical link to a network?

Most likely the virtual NIC in the VM is configured in a "bridged" mode. This makes the vNIC act like it is actually on the wire, so for the local machine to talk to it, you need the wire attached. If you would like to communicate with the guest OS from the host OS, set the vNIC to NAT mode or host only mode. This will change the IP address of the guest OS, if you're DHCP, there should be no issue. If this is static IP addressing, then you will need to figure out the configuration of the NAT in the Virtual Network Editor.
