VMware locks up on dual core? Myth? Does it really?

I am really shocked to discover this thread, I am currently experience the same problem discribed in the thread running on a machine with

Intel® Pentium® D (Dual Core)
3.0GHz, 800MHz Front Side Bus, 2x1 MB cache

Has anyone else experiencing this problem? Is there a fix/patch for this problem yet?

I run VMWare Server on a dual Xeon (dual core) 2.8GHz machine with no problems. Host OS is Win XP Pro.

We have two ESX Servers at the moment:

ProLiant DL360 G5
4 CPU x 3.2 GHz (2 Dual Core)
Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.20GHz
Hyperthreading Active

ProLiant DL380 G5
8 CPU x 2.333 GHz (2 Quad Core)
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU

I can't say I've noticed any real problems in the past year. As for the Quad cores, we just got it in last week and just got ESX on it.

Is it worth noting that the problem is only with Linux distros, not with Windows?

There has not been enough detail, IMHO, to accurately diagnose whether the problem is in the O/S, a particular VMware application/release, or the H/W.

There have been lots of sharp-edged words tossed out by folks who might ought to have been more humble, more helpful, and less hateful...

[!]But seriously[/!] I think the problem may in fact be in using hardware/OS combinations that are not considered "supported" by VMware. IMHO, we just don't have enough details from the folks who have reported the problems to offer more solid advice than what has been offered at VMTN...

We've used Ubuntu, Novell, Windows, and Debian without any problems thus far. We have also only given each machine one proc so maybe that maybe why there hasn't been any problems.
