As I know VMware Converter Starter isn't able to make ESX-VMs (only for Workstation nad VMware-Server) and VMware Converter Enterprise is not part of VirtualInfrastructure Starter Edition. What is the best and cheapest way to convert existing physical machines into our new ESX (Starter Edition)?

Look into Platespin's Powerconvert. Its mildy expensive, but it does what it says on the tin. Truly excellent product.

thanks for this.
Is it also possible to take converter starter edition and converts first to a workstation-VM and afterwards (also with starter edition) the workstation-VM to a ESX-VM?

ok I tested now 2 ways with converter3-starter:
With converter3 installed on the source phys. machine you can convert directly to your ESX.
With converter3 installed on a seperate workstation, you can convert a remote source phys. machine to a local standalone-vm (workstation version) and in a 2. converter job you can convert it to your ESX.
Worked fine for me
