Yes I'm beating a dead horse here,

out of curiosity has anyone got it working?

I keep putting this on the back burner, I don't even know if it is possible.

Not me David.
Ended up booting from an ISO image and NFS pointing the install to a flash archive.
 
ya, I've been doing that, but I'm taking flash archives of my physical boxes are part of my DR strategy, I want to be able to do the same for the virtual instances. i guess I have to keep looking.

No problem, it is an interesting subject.
I've just had a chat with our vmware guy here and he suggested that you may get away with creating templates and deploying from those. We've never tried it on the Solaris side obviously but apparently it works well for Windows.
Not exactly what you're looking for I know.
