upon turning on my computer it i get the message "VMM32.VXD is required to run windows. if this file is not in your PATH you may need to reinstall windows."

to resolve this i typed dir vmm32.vxd /s at the command prompt to seach for the file but it turned up not found meaning i need to reinstall windows.

the problem i'm having is that i can't reinstall it. my startup disk doesn't work when inserted at startup and i can't seem to access my cd drive.

when the startup disk is inserted is it not supposed to automatically bring up the windows startup menu? any ideas why my cd drive doesn't work and how to fix it without being able to access windows.

how can i go about reinstalling or a new installation of windows if i can't get my startup disk to work or my cd drive? any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance
chris.

Can you start in safe mode?
If so, go to Start > Run > and type in SFC.
Choose to extract one file, and extract vmm32.vxd from the windows CD. It may also be in c:\windows\sysbckup
If you can't get to the CD, get a boot up disk from to start the computer with CD-ROM support to reinstall win.
Double check in BIOS setup that you're set to boot from A first. Cheers,
Jim

cms1157,

First of all this problem is not too big. the solution is very simple, some times if you install any new hardware which confilicts with another program or device then this happens.
You might not find this file as this one is hidden.try using this command first c:\attrib -h -r -s {filename} then find it.
if you cann't find it then i think it is deleted by some one accidently or replaced by another file.

When you restart ur system goto bios by pressing del key and select option which says bootup sequence change it to {cdrom,c,a} then save settings and then insert startup cd.
i hope it'll work if not then change the bios settings.

another way is to goto windows
click [start][settings][control panel][Add/remove program]
then click install before clicking install insert your windows98 cd in ur cdrom.
click install and it's reinstall your windows and will fix your problem.

Kind Regards
Jehanzeb

Check the bios at the start to make sure that it is searching in the order of A: then C: if it looks for thr other way around their is no suport for the CD
