Macola 7.5.102e over Pervasive SQL on an NT 4.0 server

We are considering running NT 4.0 over VMware. I am concerned that in a few years I may not be able to buy a new server that runs NT 4.0

Does anyone have any experience running Macola (Pervasive) in NT over VMware?

Thanks in advance for any posts.

What version of Pervasive?

NT 4.0 is unsupported, I will bet your pervasive version is unsupported and 75102 is probably 6+ years old. I have never even heard of VMware. What is it?

Why are you still using such an old version of Macola?

I guess the first question should be why would you want to buy a new server in a fews years that could run NT 4 anyway. I'll make the assumption that either financially or because of customizations that you don't want to upgrade your network or Macola.

I have a client running Macola (newer version on a newer server) on VMWare. I didn't set it up but I've been involved and it seems to be running fine. I should be upgrading them to 7.6.300c in a few weeks.

We also run VMWare on a few of the laptops that have software that conflict with each other. I haven't used it on a server on a day to day basis but on a laptop it seems to slow it down in my view.

I should also note that in all of the environments that I've seen Macola running on VMWare, it is Progression SQL. Just for clarification.

dgillz: Pervasive 7.0 My reasons for using an older version are well known. It is expensive and time consuming to update Macola with every new version that comes out. The version we run meets our needs. (If it works - don't fix it.) I plan to run this version another 5-10 years and then buy either a new Macola license or a competing package.

VMware is an operating systems that runs operating systems. One of its benefits is that it will allow one to run Windows or Linux independent of the actual hardware.

kscheeler: Your assumptions are correct about why I want to run NT. I am aware that NT is unsupported, as is Pervasive 7.0 and our version of Macola. Thank you for your feedback on VMware.

Macola's updates are included at no additional charge if you are paying annual maintenance, which is 10% of the purchase price of the software. That may sound expensive, but when compared to the 16-18% annually charged by Best, Microsoft, SAP, etc., it is not at all bad.

I admit it can be time consuming however.

Thanks for the scoop on VMware, it sounds like an interesting package.
