I'm trying to set up a VM Pro networked messaging system to move voicemail between sites via SMTP. Just one or two mailboxes at each of 7 sites that we could use as drop boxes, that someone at a foreign site could log onto, then manually route a message to the local intended recipient. Would like to use SCN but can't centralize VM.

Do I need to create an extension and VM locally, at each site which represents a true foreign extension and VM? Help file is a bit sketchy. Thanks for any suggestions

No do not create a local extension to match the remote.

I've not done one in a while but I am 99% sure this is what I did last.

The VPNM is going to use the SMTP service as configured in the Control Panel. Each needs to be set with the FQDN of the VM server at the other site.

On VM Server 1 point the SMTP to itself (i.e. vmserver1.customer.local)
On VM Server 2 point the SMTP to itself (i.e. vmserver2.customer.local)

In VPNM on server 1 add “Server” vmserver2.customer.local and all the users for site 2.
In VPNM on server 2 add “Server” vmserver1.customer.local and all the users for site 1.

Thanks KHolladay. That was definitly a big help. Still having trouble getting this to work though. I'm confused by the "local extension" field when you modify details for a VPNM user on the remote system. Where does the local VM server hold a message, until it can be delivered to the remote system? In any case, I've tested that the VPNM servers are able to communicate on port 25.

I've almost got this working now: I Created a User on IPO1, without assigning an extension, but enabled the VM for that user. In the VPNM database, on VMPROSERVER1 I've added that user, and assigned a "local extension" that matches the foreign extension.

The messages are now being received by the SMTP server at the foreign site, The problem I'm having now is that the VPNM Receiver at the foreign site, is not moving the MIME attachment into the correct Accounts Folder, or moving it anywhere, for that matter. I've looked at the message header, and the correct username and extension is specified. All required services are started and running.
