Dear All,

I recently installed VMware ESXi 4.0 and hot cloned a Poweredge Dell 2600 (File server) using VMware converter 4.0 but when I power on the VM it shuts down by itself, I have disabled some adpters including the NIC but still the same thing.

I also tried ESXi 3.5 and VMware converter 3.0 with similar results. These servers have reached its end of life and needs to be retired since one of the drives failed once.

Please any link, suggestions on how to fix these will be highly appreciated.

Start the VM in safe mode and disable all old Dell drivers\services on the machine, usually when something like this happens after a P2V is down to a driver\service still running.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Create a new text file. Put the following code in the text file:

Code:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
devmgmt.msc

Rename the file something.bat and then copy the file to the server. Run it by double clicking it, that will bring up your device manager but allow you to see hidden (no longer present) devices. Once in Device manager click View then Show Hidden Devices. Click on each hidden device (they will be greyed out) and delete it. Go through your entire device manager and remove all your old hardware.

That might fix it for ya. Good luck!

Cheers
Rob

The answer is always "PEBKAC!

Hi All,
Thank you for your assistance, I am yet to be able to power up the server. I have stopped all the services, used msconfig to determine which service is the suspect but none has worked so far.

Please help!!!!

thank you for your envisaged help.

If you are able to boot into safe mode, Go to My Computer > Properties > Startup Recovery tab > and uncheck the box to automatically restart.

This way if it is a BSOD that is shutting the system down, you will be able to see the stop code and perhaps google it for a cause.

Also is there anything in the event logs that give an indication as to the problem?

Thanks cabrun, I was able to powerup the server and has been running since Saturday.

I recreated the VM using version 4 without a NIC card and looked into the Event viewer for services/drivers stopped the intel/Broadcom NIC card service, deleted the entry from the registry.

Then powered up the VM which never shuts down again then I uninstalled the intel/Broadcom drivers, then added a new NIC card.

I was able to also convert 2 DCs in this manner without any glitch, this has also been running since saturday.

thank you all
