Is it possible for example VLAN1 on switch1 to communicate with VLAN1 on another switch2 with both switches trunk using VTP. Or do I need a router? This has always confuse me.

I thought in order for 2 different VLANS to communicate with one another for example VLAN1 on SWITCH1 wants to talk to VLAN2 on SWITCH2 you would need a router but if VLAN1 on SWITCH1 wants to talk to VLAN1 on SWITCH2 you don’t need a router as long as the 2 are trunk. Can some one please clear this up.

Trunk connection is for carrying traffic from at least two VLANs accross one physical connection. If you have just one VLAN, communication does not require any trunking.

Your understanding is correct , if you trunk a vlan across a link to another switch you will be able to communicate with clients in the same vlan . you can run 20 vlans across that trunk and if you are talking to clients that are in the same vlan they will be able to talk to each other . If you need to talk between vlans then yes you do need a layer 3 routing device .
