VLAN Tagging Docs/FAQ? 1

The docs provided with 450/470/8600 switches on VLAN tagging are minimal, and do not cover a wide range of scenarios. They do not describe all uses of the PVID field or the full process of VLAN membership assignment within the switch. At what points in the frame ingress/forward/egress process are membership decisions made, and how does the PVID field effect the decisons at each of these points, etc? I called Nortel about this and the technician said it was not the first time he had heard the question, and he was looking for some better docs himself. We have some tagged VLANs in our production network, but I suspect their configuration is more complex than they need to be. Does anyone have better docs?

I use a lot of tagged VLANs myself, but they are very simple ones. I just use tagging to run more than one VLAN over a trunk.

for any tagged port: it can listen to as many VLANs as you wish, it will tag its outgoing packets with the PVID.

In my case, these are always the same, although the manual makes clear you can do clever mix and match.

describes the packet filtering, which is used on accelars, which can be added to tagging to raise prioritys, route packets to different ports, etc. (this is not used in 450s)
