Hey Guys!

This has been nagging me for a while:

I have one IPO500 with a couple hundred phones on it. On one of the sites, the phones are in a phone VLAN ID 11.

Problem: When the POE switch reboots (or the building looses power), the phones delete the VLAN id 11.
This results in a guy going from phone to phone, programming the VLAN ID every time.

Is there somehow i can get the phones on this site to remember the VLAN, without having impact on the other phones also connected to this PBX? I assume i could set it up in 16xxsettings, but then it would affect the other sites as well i guess...

Cheers..

DHCP is your friend

Read the documents on the 176 scope options

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

You can set it in the 46xxsetings.txt file or set it on an external dhcp server
When the phone boots it should get those settings or your network setup is wrong

Thanks for putting me on the right track, is was just staring at 46xxsettings. Actually i now found this solution, and i didnt have the 176 option on my untagged scope.

Im gonna test it later today, and get back to you.

I set this up on my MS DHCP:

On the DHCP server, you will need Option 176 in BOTH the data and voice scope.

Data Scope for untagged VLAN: Option 176: "L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=XXX" (XXX is your Vlan ID)

Voice Scope for Tagged voice VLAN:Option 176: MCIPADD=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,MCIPORT=1719,TFTPSRVR=yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy,VLANTEST=0

That is right, with out the option in the data lan it will never find the voice lan

That setup looks good - I reckon it will work

I prefer to use DHCP over the 46xxSettings file (personally)

I never used the 46xxsettings.txt file to be honest :)

Considering im using 16XX phones, do I need a option 242: "L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=XXX" as well?

Cheers...

The documentation suggests You need option 242 only,
but considering that you have it working already using option 176. Unless you have statically addressed all the phones...

Test it and see!

Hey Matt!
Actually i had both 242 and 176 because i was using both 46XX phones and 16XX phones on the same site..

Im gonna leave both options there...ill let you know later today how it works out!

You'll need both then

On both VLANS as well

I.e
Data Scope for untagged VLAN:
Option 176: "L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=XXX" (XXX is your Vlan ID)
Option 242: "L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=XXX"

Voice Scope for Tagged voice VLAN:
Option 176: MCIPADD=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,MCIPORT=1719,TFTPSRVR=yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy,VLANTEST=0
Option 242: MCIPADD=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,MCIPORT=1719,TFTPSRVR=yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy,VLANTEST=0

If the reboot of the switch make the phones forget their VLAN then during startup of the switch the phones are told by the switch to use another VLAN as stored in the phones.
By no way ( unless the phone is defect ) the phone forget the VLAN setting if powered down.
I would check the config of the switch first, LLDP Med function is the only one which can chnge the phone's VLAN setting.

To make sure if the VLAN ID works, run WireShark on your PC when you plugin you network cable.

Look for DHCP in the trace and right click on the packet to see if the server sends the right option.

Make sure you have set the opion to "string" and fill in the string option after you've pressed OK.

Aslo do not enter "L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=XXX" as a string in the VOICE Vlan.

Are you sure your on the right DHCP server? They might use DHCP relay on the switches.
