I have two offices one in Class A IP addressing 10.200.X.X/ 255.255.0.0 & other office is using class B IP addressing 172.17.2.x/ 255.255.255.0. Can I use one 24 port switch and use 12 ports for office A & 12 ports for office B using VLANs
Hello
Switches will associate the ethernet ports to MAC address. It will learn all layer 2 address then it will forward packets base on that.
The VLANs are cleaner because later on,if you decided you can put in a router and allow routing between the 2 subnets.
Hope this helps.

Another option would be to buy a switch that supports layer 3 vlans, where you can assign ip address to a vlan. Cisco, HP and Extreme are to vendors that I know support that feature. That way you will not need a router and can forward traffic between to the two vlans.
Hello
For the intervlan routing. The layer 3 switch will work or you can use a router as well.An even cheaper solution is to put some of the ports in multi-vlan mode.I know some of the Cisco older switches ,support this feature.

Hi plshlpme, the two offices are at the same physical location which are connected with their own respective routers. I just wanted to use a 24 gigabit switch for both the offices which are on different Class A 10.200.X.X/ 255.255.0.0 & other office is using class B 172.17.3.x/255.255.255.0 IPs. both offices are connected to different Internet gateway & servers
