I have a Catalyst 2948G which I want to access via the Visual Switch Manager (browser). I can telnet into the switch and enable logon, however, I can not see the version of the IOS, nor can I issue a show running-config command. I've typed in enable with password for higher privilages and now need to get to the config logon. I type in config but I only receive the message Usage: configure <host> <file>. When I type in the IP address of the switch in a browser (IE5.5) nothing comes up, therefore, I am assuming I need to enable http server settings via a telnet session.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The command is "configure terminal" or just "conf t".

are you in user mode or privelidged mode? Have you entered the "Enable" command after logging on? [You can't see running-config until then]

As you say, you need to make sure you have http server in your config.

I have entered "Enable" after logging on, however when I type in "configure termninal" I get the response "This funtion provided by set commands. Use 'set help' for more info".

There is nothing obvious in set help that allows me to change http server settings.

What is weired is that when I do a show version, I should see the IOS version, however all I get is Nmpsw:4.5<3> and no IOS version.

Hmm, didn't think the 2900 series switches ran set based IOS. Maybe someone else can jump in with some ideas here?

The 2948 runs the CatOS like the 4000, 5000, and 6000. After logging in, you should be at a (enable) prompt. From there, you can do a set ip http server enable. You do not need to go into config t mode.

That is my point. When I go to an enable prompt, it doesnt recognise the set ip http server enable command. I think I need to reboot the switch (which I'll try tonight) but I wondered whether I was in some weird telnet mode because as I said earlier, the IOS version doesn't show.

My bad...I missed that. 4.5(3) is the version. You can also do a dir and it will show you the file. This version will not support http. You will have to upgrade. I don't think there is many feature in the web interface. A lot different from the 3500 and other 2900 series.
