Visual Studio To Edit/Test Project On Another Server

I'm a little confused abot how to go about modifying a set of ASP.NET pages on a seperate tet web server with Visual Studio 2005. My Visual Studio experience hs been limited to stand alone windows programs I have written on my laptop and then ditributed to client machines.

I now need to work on ASP.NET pages.
I have a seperate test web server that will be loaded with an off the shelf web site package. I will need to edit some of the pages with Visual Studio 2005.

Is it possible to load Visual Studio 2005 on my laptop and connect to the web server to edit and test the page changes
using the web server? Or is the done thing to edit and test on my laptop and then deploy to the test web server?
