Visual Studio Extensibility Object Model

Does anyone know where I can find some decent documentation/example code on the Visual Studio Extensibility Object Model. I want to write a plugin that can load resource files into the designer and change the HELPIDs but cannot find enough documentation to even discover whether this is possible. There is an object model diagram on MSDN that suggests that it might be but absolutely no example code.
