Has anybody out there worked with Visual SourceSafe? I would like to be able to provide a link into the source code(NOT my Cold Fusion files) from a documentation page. I can display a documentation page that describes a software service, and I would like to be able to allow the user access to the source code for that service which is under revision control through VSS from that documentation page. (with appropriate safeguards, of course)Even read-only would be nice. Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Hey, Calista. We use SourceSafe here for our CF files, so the three of us aren't stepping on each other's toes while we work.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you're asking though. You should be able to add any file you want to SourceSafe directory and make them read only. The files can be of any extension, so you might have to nudge me a little here.

Also, even if a file is under revision, another user can view the file.

Load me up with a little more info, and I'll see what I can see. ;-) Kevin

Duh!!! I meant to post this in the Cold Fusion forum. :~/

Oh well, Kevin, as long as you're here... I am a tech writer/webdesigner (Actually, nobody's really quite sure what my job title is) in a software engineering department. The engineers write programs and scripts in a variety of languages (C, C++, Java, etc.). There is a library of these programs, and to write an application, they pick the programs they need and paste them together with scripts. These programs are under revision control in VSS.

My job is to organize the documentation and write a web-based app to access it. Part of the documentation is a set of documents describing each program, what it does, inputs, outputs, etc. I have written a Cold Fusion app to view these documents. What I would like to add to each document is a link to the source code of the program the document is describing.

Thanks for all your help! I've been on this job for five months, now, and so far I've been teaching myself HTML, CSS, Cold Fusion, and now, Windows Server 2000. (Bet you're wondering how I got the job. Long story.) I don't know what I would have done (or do!) without you, GunJack, bangers, tsdragon(Love the tag line!), iza, and many others who have answered my questions. Thanks everyone!

I wondered if you wanted this thread to be in this forum.

And yes, the people you have mentioned are the exact same people I would have mentioned. I must say though, GunJack is like a freak of nature!!! The stuff this guy comes up with in the CF forum is incredible. He's bailed me out more times than I can count. The rest are equally helpful in their respective forums. However, since we're throwing praise at these people, you forgot to mention Jaredn in the JavaScript forum. Since you may not use that one, I'll let you slide. ;-)

As for your problem, this may not be the best idea, but why not just create a sub-folder and slap a *.txt version of all the source code for your pages in it. They can view it all they want, but any editing (whether purposely or inadvertently) will have no affect on the actual page. Just go to the pages, right-click, view source, and save as.

I don't know that I'm right, but that's probably how I'd go about it. Keep me posted :) Kevin

Hi, Kevin!

I haven't gotten into JavaScript(YET!), so I have not had the pleasure of making Jaredn's aquaintance.

Anyway, it's not my CF source code I want to give them access to, it's their C++(or whatever) source code. But, I'll think about what you said. That might work for this, too.

Thanks!
Calista :)

I assumed that's what you meant.

If the source code, be it C++, VB, JAVA, et.al. is in SourceSafe, you should be able to point them directly to it, without even having to create a "view" copy. At least I can't think of a reason why not.

Although, a folder, separate from your actual working files, might still be the best/safest route. The file sizes would be negligible as well. Kevin

By the way, Calista, I'm sure I didn't even know HALF what you know when I got my last job. I was in the Air Force and slipped into a programming job with absolutely NO knowledge whatsoever. I went to school, got a degree, and got out of the military. Best career/financial move I ever made! Kevin

Thanks, I'll keep your suggestions in mind. I'm not quite ready to implement this phase, yet, but I'll let you know how it goes. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

BTW, this is the best job I've ever had.

Calista

That's quite alright.

Glad you like your work. That is always good.

Well, keep us all posted on your progress w/ SourceSafe. See you at the ColdFusion side of the house. Kevin
