I'm trying to read foxpro databases with an ODBC DSN - .dbf/.cdx files with a free table dsn. When I set up the DSN I see all the files. When I am in Crystal I select the files by selecting the DSN and there are no tables displayed. The same thing happens when I try to link from access 2002. I've tried finding and reloading drivers for visual foxpro but none of them can see the tables.

Any suggestions?

Which driver are you using?

Try selecting the Free Table Directory in the Microsoft Visual Foxpro driver, it may be that they didn't use a DBC.

I am using the free table directory already - I see the files when I set up the DSN but can't when I am in Crystal or Access.

I am having this problem too. In CR Developer 8.5, I can log on the server and write reports. I am beginning to try the SQL Designer today. Log on the server the same way, it says successful. Went through the wiz steps to create a VERY simple query. Can see and place fields, but not browse the values. It builds the SQL, but returns no data. I think I'm not connected, but it says I am. I can connect fine using CR 8.5. So I logged off, and tried to log back on again, and now cannot even SEE the tables. They are Visual Foxpro tables.
Further adding to the mystery, I pasted the SQL from the CR report into the SQL Designer, and got data! Can anyone tell me what it going on here?
Thanks!

I agree that is crazy. When I tried to demonstrate it to someone else the next day, everything worked perfectly! We decided it must have been hanging on to something behind the scenes that shutting down overnight cleaned up.
Reboot wins again!

SOLVED - The problem appears to be with the inability of the Microsoft Visual Foxpro driver to handle long file names. I got to thinking that dbase does not handle long file names and maybe if I put the files into a 8 char file name off the root it would work - sure enough, it works in both Access 2002 and Crystal Reports. I'd be interested to hear whether that solves the problems of the others who posted to my original question. Of to writing reports on my found data.

Thanks, Pete56, I'm definitely going to think about your discovery. I'm writing reports with CR 8.5, which was specified by the vendor of the program/data. (Abra payroll)It worked ok until I tried to install & configure the SQL designer.

Although ABRA's latest release bundles Crystal 8.5 with their payroll software, I am using my own, so they may have some customization going with their bundled version of CR. I do know you can't install and run it without having the payroll also installed on the same machine. Since I do reports, but not payroll, we all ready had our own copy.
I know this rambles, sorry. Anyway, a reboot made our problem go away; but that's no guarantee it won't be back and I'll keep your info in mind. Thanks - have a great day!
