Visual editor goes blank

New to WebSphere. Created a visual class, and added a tree to the left side of a split pane. After setting up the labels and doing a little other stuff, the tree no longer showed up on the frame or panel. It's went down below the frame, and the status bar says the tree is too complex to represent. Then when I added a tree selection listener so I could respond to the node selected, the screen designer went blank - even though the program runs normally. Can someone explain what the rules are for keeping the screen designer functional?
