The VBA language is the same language as VB. Because it runs inside another application it does not need, nor have, the features related to stand-alone projects. Instead, VBA has direct access to the object model of the parent application. VB.Net is a little different although there are many similarities.
VBA versions more or less mirror VB versions. VBA version 6, introduced in Office 2000, is equivalent to VB6; the earlier VBA version 5 is similarly equivalent to VB5. There is no VBA.Net but VSTO (Visual Studio Tools for Office) is available if you have Visual Studio and I think (I haven't used it) it is .Net-like.
Enjoy,
Tony
