I downloaded the current MSDN Ultimate SP1. It installs, however IE stops and restarts and several services stop with no apparent fix. Media Center will not setup and freezes. Anyone having similar problems? Need some ideas.

A few details to help understand your problem.

Is this a standalone SP1 download or is it a complete download of Vista embedded with SP1?

Is it an Upgrade or clean install of Vista?

Is it your first time using Vista on this machine?

Have you been running any of the SP1 beta versions prior to this install of SP1?

Its a complete download of vista with sp1. It was a clean install. It was the first time vista was attempted on this machine. No beta versions were used.

Is the machine ready and suitable for Vista?

Are there any Bios updates available?

Have a look at any of the Setup logs in C:/Windows or this location to see if there were any obvious problems during install.
C:\Windows\Panther

Were there any problems during the download of Vista?

Have you looked in the Event Viewer to see what errors are being repeatedly displayed?

Hi Linney,

So that you have the complete picture here is what transpired. I downloaded Vista Untimate with sp1. I installed that version as a new install. It loaded but the media center would not setup. In fact when I tried to activate the media center IE7 went haywire and kept opening and closing at will. I went back to the MSDN and downloaded a fresh copy of Ultimate with sp1 and tried again as a clean install. Same problem. So Im thinking there is something missing in the setup files. I started over and downloaded vista enterprise which did not have the service pack. It loaded as a fresh install without any problem and runs fine. Everything works. The enterprise edition does not have sp1 and it has not been updated. I'm thinking there is something goofy with sp1.

I suppose the next thing to consider is whether you want to quit while you are ahead or try SP1 standalone upgrade into your current install?

SP1 has been out for a little while now, longer if you include the betas, and I can't recollect other people having similar problems so it is hard to suggest anything more at this stage.

I appreciate your help and I too am wondering if upgrading to Ultimate is worth the trouble. What I wanted from Ultimate was the media center but I can do without it. Thanks again.

If you have a MSDN subscription, perhaps you can try Home Premium (has Media Center) and if you have enough room and drive space, look at a dual boot situation?
