I was having problems on my vista for sometime since it was not recognising my in-built CD/DVD-RAM drive properly and giving me trouble reading/writing and later even recognizing the inserted CD/DVDs.

Seeking help from the internet I found out to remove the two reg entries on UpperFilter and LowerFilter, which in turn made a big mess on the drive system.

I downloaded the Roxio again to reinstall and managed to install but with this problem still hanging. No luck with my drive either.

Any help would higly be appreciated.

PS: BTW, I m using Compaq 6710b, with Vista x64 - just in case it helps!

Have you tried removing the drive from Device Manager, then rebooting which will allow Vista to rediscover the drive?

Is there any firmware update for that model drive from the manufacturer?

You could just be battling a faulty drive or cabling too.

When the Roxio software was uninstalled was Vista able to see, read. and write to the drive with the built-in software?

See if something else is causing the problem.

Have a look at running sfc /scannow too.

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista

Have you also tested with a different brand of media (disk)?
