Hi all, I'm brand new to Vista, so please be gentle with me.

Does Vista(Rev 4.3) have the ability to classify parts as stocked and non-stocked?

The definition of "stocked" that I am used to is that the QOH of the item will be maintained by some of the system processes.

Stocked parts are accounted for by QOH. Receiving a stocked part causes the QOH to increment by the quantity receieved. An example of a stocked part (for a PC manufacturer) would be a hard drive.

Non-stocked parts can be created, and purchased, but as soon as they are received, they "disappear". Meaning that the QOH is unknown, and that the cost of the parts is expensed at the time the parts are received. An example of a non-stocked part might be a shop supply like electrical tape. As soon as its recived it goes in a supply cabinet for people to use as required.

How does Vista manage the difference? Is the Invetory Class field used by the receiving process to determine wheteher to automatically increment the QOH? Or does tis need to be done at the time the PO is issued?

And what about a flag to to determine if a part is "Controlled" or "Non-controlled". Again I'll give you my definitions.

A non-controlled part is one whos QOH is only effected by the receiving process, or manually issuing the part.

A controlled part will have its QOO, QOA, and QOH controlled by the various other modules. A sales order will increment the QOA. A PO will increment the QOO. Receiving the item will decrement the QOO, and increment the QOH. Shipping the item would decrement both the QOA and the QOH.

And there are good instances when a part should be stocked, but non-controlled. Just ask me if you want an example.

I'll wait until I hear your thoughts before I further complicate it with manufactured parts.

Thanks in advance
