Vista not playing .avi files

Hello,

I have a movie stored in .avi format. It does not appear that I am able to view this file in any regular Vista utility.

If I try to open the file using Media Player, a message at the bottom indicates: 'Codec Required' ... 'Downloading Codec' ... 'Installing Codec'.

Once this process is complete, the file opens, however, it only seems to play as an audio file. There is no video output.

The file seems to work perfectly in an XP environment with Media Player.

If I try to open the file in Media Centre, I receive a message 'Cannot open the file.'

I also tried to open the file in Quicktime. The file opened, however, this time there was no audio or video, but the progess bar moves as though the file is activated.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how a can view and listen to this avi file?

(Note: I am not looking for a file converter, I just want to watch the movie in this format?)

I am using Vista Premium and all updates and service packs have been applied. I am also the only user for this Vista machine.

Thanks.

I am having exactly the same problem on a brand new Dell Vostro laptop Vista Home Basic SP1 just installed last week. Have tried 2 different AVI files with same result but both work fine under XP.

Didn't chase it because this is a business machine so playing videos is not mandatory, but was just looking to check out WMP performance under Vista.

So BlueJay07 is not alone in this one.

Hi again

I did find this reference, which describes the AVI format as a wrapper within which different video formats can reside, which require different codecs. It gives a link to a utility which will ID the format in a given file and also gives links where to get various codecs.

I have not tried this because the Vista machine is away now, but for what it's worth:

Thanks for the imput Jock.

I will investigate into your link further when I have the chance.

You may find that it's because the audio codec is what's missing.

I would honestly suggest downloading and using VLC ( it pretty much has all the codecs needed to play most file formats.

Another codec pack I would also recommend would be the K-Lite Codec pack found on
Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Simon: Thanks for this information and the links. I will save them for future use.

BigBadBen: I reviewed your link and for my situation right now, this seems to be the best. I downloaded and installed the codec package and everything seems to be working great. I can see and hear the picture.

Thanks to all for your advice. All of the posted links are very helpful.

Have a great day.

Sounds like you got it resolved.

You may want to do a search for the KLite codec pack, and also install DIVX decoder. That pretty much gives you every codec you'll ever need.

Ghaughma: Thank you very much for your post. Seems like the KLite package does look after many things. I will keep this in mind for future use.

I keep the most current copy of KLite on my flash drive. Then I got it handy when I need it. :)
