Hi,

I have a WD Terabyte external harddrive that I was using with windows xp.

I got a new machine with vista preinstalled on it.

When I plugged my Hard drive into the new machine I got a dialog message saying that the drive was not formatted and asking if I wanted to format it now.

I plugged it back into the xp machine to make sure it was still ok but I got the same formatting dialog.

Is there anyway I get my external harddrive back to a readable state without loosing everything on it? I had been using it to back up files !! :(

How does this drive connect to your pc? Thru USB? Does device manager show any problems? Have you tried to delete the USB port and re-scan for hardware changes?

Did you properly disable the drive before you unplugged it? Sounds like the drive has failed, regardless of which OS you were trying to use it with. (Is the drive Vista compatible?)
