I have an NVidia 6800 video card in my PC. I've just recently installed Vista Home Premium on my PC. I'm assuming that in order to utilize DirectX 10 games on my PC I need a video card that supports DirectX 10. Is that right?

Yes, in order to make use of directx 10 you need a card that supports it. 6800 does not.

But you can run games under Vista just fine with DX9, and even when games come out that do support DX10, they will also work just fine with DX9 cards (though with less eye-candy).
