Vista has been running fine for over 6 months but in the last few weeks several users have had issues which are the same (me included).

1) User opens Computer (Start > Computer) it starts to open sit but sits there with the whizzing thing spinning (use to be egg timer - not sure what it is called for Vista) for up to several minutes, eventually it does display what you want - what is causing this?

It was fine until a few weeks ago and the gut feeling is that this started to happen just after the latest updates.

2) The folder/file view select keeps changing back to some other one to the one you set it too, it can be fine for weeks, days, then it just changes, seemingly at random - how can I stop this?

3)When printing, click Ok to print and the print dialogue dims, the Vista whizzing timer thing sits there spinning, can be minutes (much the same as issue 1)before it prints.

4)When copying thousands of files and GB's of data, it seems to take ages to calculate the time it will take, and more than once it seems to have got into some sort of loop - this issue was noticed from first use of Vista.

As I said, all of the above issue, with the exception of the last one, number 4, seemed to have happened after the last updates were applied, there was also a big update for Offcie 2007

Does the Task Manager give you any clues during the pause as to what Process is using the CPU?

Will it Start and run correctly in Safe Mode.

To get further information about any errors look in your Event viewer.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on this site

If you feel that Windows Updates are causing the problem you could try removing the installed updates and test.

There have been several reliability updates over the past few months, have you got those installed?

Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB936357)

The good news is that SP1 for Vista is up to the Release Candidate stage and hopefully will be released via Microsoft in the near future.

To check conflicting software, most of these apply equally to Vista.

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.

Some general things to try.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Run the System File Checker program from an elevated command prompt by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it.

Sorry if I am of no help here...

but nr. 1 - sounds like a network problem, ie. a recently removed network drive or other network resource, which VISTA is looking for at boot...

nr. 2 - no idea, I am not experiencing this at all... presently at least...

nr. 3 - if these printers are over the network, then see my answer on nr. 1...

nr. 4 - is a known problem with VISTA, which MS addressed with an update...

The copy process may stop responding when you try to copy files from a server on a network to a Windows Vista-based computer

I seem to get the following error for item 1

Log Name: Application
Source: Application Hang

Event ID: 1002
Task Category: (101)

Computer: xxx.xxx.com
Description:
The program explorer.exe version 6.0.6000.16549 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Problem Reports and Solutions control panel. Process ID: 11bc Start Time: 01c83d895bdd5abf Termination Time: 31

Automatic Update claims it has done all the critical updates - do I have to carry additional "Critical" updates manually?

All users have mapped network drives, the same drives have been mapped since the inception of the the new Vista machines, so nothing has changed there.

ChkDsk found no errors on my machine

On the face of it - and reading the info provided in the above links, I have all the latest updates mentioned there.

BadBigBen has picked up on something, that problem 1 and 3 could be related, i.e. networking.

We have all noticed that Windows Updates always seem to update the Realtek NIC drivers, maybe there is something in this. But as I said, it use to all work fine and dandy, for all of us!

Sfc output follows:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 99% complete.Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but wa
s unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Is this a major problem? The log file is huge.

As far as updates for drivers are concerned it is better if you take the updates from the manufacturer and avoid Windows Updates offering for drivers altogether. In your position that would mean uninstalling the Realtek drivers and installing the manufacturers current set of drivers, and hiding the drivers offered by Windows Updates.

As to the SFC output you can only imagine what that means unless you actually wade through the 50MB+ output CBS log, which hidden in all the output will be a few files that couldn't be verified because of permissions or other unknown problems.

I have downloaded the NIC drivers direct from the manufacturer and it has made no difference.

Funny thing is, exploring the Network works fine.

Downloaded and installed SP1 for Vista (RC) and it all now works fine.

3 weeks on...is SP1 behaving itself?

I installed Vista Business on a new build and lots of updates were needed...once I installed them it slowed booting right down.
