Visible Notification of New Mail Not Working

Using Notes Client 5.0.8. Visible notification of new mail is activated under preferences but is not working. The new mail arrives but no notification.

Have tried re-installing the client. Edited notes.ini and deleted 'newmailseqnum'. Have run fix-up on users account. Compacted the mailfile.

None of this has worked.

Any suggestions?
