What does the VIS actually do . I heard it is the mmx equal for the sparc .

I also read somewhere that it is supposed to improve multi-media functions, however I am not noticing that.
I'm just trying to run a couple of mpeg clips, but the performance is lacking. The play back is something like 5 frames a second.

MY hardware is a sun ultra 5 333, 512meg ram(software is mtv(XIL ver) and showmetv).
Do I need to turn on any special "switchs" to get the VIS kicking in during playback.
thank you in advance.

If you are using an Ultra 5, 333 MHz, 512 RAM, AND trying to display video, then you may be slightly underpowered. Depending on what slots you have available on your motherboard (and how much $$ you want to spend), you can upgrade your video to an add-on video board that Sun typically bundles with their Ultra 10 systems. I have one of those boards on my system (shipped with the system) and can render video quite decently. Sorry for the bad news, but hardware is hardware...
