VirusScan opens with an alert box that points to saiehook.dll (I'm pretty sure saie = search assistant for internet explorer) This locks up everything in XP. Any way to tell VirusScan to ignore what seems to be an innocent file?

Innocent file?
Negative.

Try killing it off in safe mode with system restore disabled. Internet Optimizer can be a p.i.a.

Run a thorough malware scan afterwards, as I'd wager you've got more than just this.

Thanks so much,
I tried to remove them before but I couldn't, but I will try the steps on the iamnotageek pages you led me to.

I did run spybot S&D and it found 125+ things to fix. I guess that's why I assumed this was innocent.

Is there an equivalent to spybot for malware?

SpyBot, AdAware, Bazooka spyware scanner, Webroot SPysweeper, and Hijack This! should all be in your arsenal.
