I know this is a virus, but I cannot figure out which one. It is on a Dell laptop with XP, and Norton 2003 with updated definitions.

A virus window will popup, saying that Norton has detected a virus and deleted. The first one was blaster.worm, then a window will come up with a message that the PC will shutdown, with a timer counting down from 60 seconds, after which it will shutdown. We bring it back up, and after awhile another antivirus window will popup, this time it said w32.spyboot.worm, and then the timer will come up.

Last night I took it home and did a full scan of the PC, found nothing. I used it for 90 minutes, no messages. So I thought it was fine. I give it to the woman we have working offsite, and she continues to have the problems.

Does anyone know what the name of this virus is? If I knew that I could at least look at symantec's site I could find a fix or something?

PLEASE HELP, I can't take much more from this lady!

If you don't disable system restore on CP before you cleaning the virus off, she's just going to keep calling you.

That should have read XP, not CP....sorry.

I got the removal tool from Symantec and ran it, but it stated that no virus was found. How can that be?

I disabled the sys restore, and reset the RPC service to not restart the PC.

Anything else I should do? Can this reoccur again?

My ISP (ntl world) have launched this at the start of the blaster worm and showing how it can be fixed on its cable TV. OVER AND OVER, I felt like shouting "ALL I WANT IS MOVIES, NOT BLASTER" lol

Do you think I should by a monkey, it's cheaper and better than windows :p

if it is still rebooting, the patch has not worked. the virus scanner can stop the virus from infecting the machine which it is doing. however it cannot stop the virus from coming in the hole, only the patch can do that. when the virus comes in the hole it will cause a reboot even before the virus scanner can kill it...

basically they patch isnt working, you need to make sure you are getting the correct patch, and reinstall it. if it still doesnt work bill gates is to blame
