Virus/Spyware ARGGH svchost.exe problems on windows 2000

Hi All, running windows 2000

Im having some really nasty problems. As soon as i connect to the internet i get the message that svchost.exe has generated errors and must close. I continue to get this message while on the internet. Further problems occur as follows - Cannot disconnect from internet, most websites don't work, when searching in google the first page of results are all porn sites, control panel screws up, further error message of mstask.exe has generated errors, internet explorer opens and continually types " y y y y" in the search bar. Ive also noticed occasionally an icon appear at the bottom right, when i hove over it has an ip address of 217. something but then disppears.

Ive done so much to try and get rid of this including numerous ad aware scans, microsofts new spyware scan, ive installed all windows updates and service pack 4, used cwshredder and stinger and hijack this, ran avast anti virus, ran msblaster and SoBigF removal tools, updated internet explorer exploit patches, re-installed internet explorer, done all of the above in safe mode as well but ARGGGHHH it wont go away, what else can i do? I really dont want to format the whole thing! loads of other threads have had this problem but i cant find any of the resolutions to work for me !! help appreciated.

It is an FAQ posted by Bcastner, if, after running this the problem still exists, post your hijack this log file. Also, check out your hosts file and make certain no entries have been added to it.

Have you checked you Hosts file, sounds like you have hosts file redirects.

Hi Guys, I ran the online virus installs and the winsock fixer and i dont appear to be getting the svchost errors anymore, although im slightly sceptical that it will be back. One strange thing that is happening, i have never seen or heard of this before. When i connect to the internet, a song starts playing? some indie song. Ive made sure i have no webpage etc open or winamp, but a song starts playing?! and i cant get into task manager still so i can't see whats running.

Thanks for advise so far, can someone please advise where to find my host file and what to check it for?

The only entry in this file should be

127.0.0.1 Local Host

As for the music playing at the startup of IE. Did you run hijackthis? It almost sounds as if there's an entry (which should be caught) that is calling out to a file at the launch of IE.
