Hi!
Can you please help me to help my neighbor, she has new PC with DSl and she got virus,
when she is running virus protection it tells her that it can not remove the virus.
I think whatever she've got is more advanced and overruling.

We suppose to meet Monday and try to figure out what to do.

If you have ideas please, share.
Thanks

What virus? Each one is a little different depending on what registry keys are affect, location of files, which file(s) is/are infected, etc. Please supply more details.

To determine how long it will take to write and debug a program, take your best estimate, multiply that by two, add one, and convert to the next higher units.

Hi there,

if she got DSL, then she can go online and have an ONLINE SCAN performed by a renowned AntiVirus Company, such as TrendMicro... as the Online ViralDefinitions are up to date...

if all else fails, as a last resort, you can always reinstall the OS, after a total Data Backup, and reformat the OS partition... effectively wiping the Virus out... but this should be the very last resort...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Thanks I am off to her house to find out more

One thing that happens sometimes with XP (or ME)is that the discovered viruses will be in system restore files. The AV programs are unable to remove items there, you have to clear restore points to fix the issue. Just be sure you don't need the restore points for some other recovery prior to clearing.

It's 10 O'Clock ( somewhere! ).
Are your registry and data backed up?

Check out trend micro, like has been said. Also try panda software, mcafee and symantec (links can be found in faq). Those should get you up and running. The ones I listed are all online scanners as well.

diogenes10,
this is axactly what happened, She has WinAntiVirus...2005 something that detected trojans but couldn't remove few.
What is "clear restore points to fix the issue"?

I also run msconfig and found items at her Startup like Nero... so plain "got to go" stuff, about 8 and few that nobody knows what it is like htpfgher etc...

So now we are unchecking those Startups and will restart and run WinAntiVirus...2005 to write down exactly what it finds and can't remove.

oddly enough her SpySweeper doesn't find anything. Mine always find 20 items at least...go figure.

Thanks to all
