We are running Websense (SurfControl) Web and Email filtering which has inbuilt virus protection just inside our firewall and was wondering if we needed to have Virus Protection on our Exchange server if SurfControl was already scanning inbound and outbound emails?

Reason for this is the virus licence renewal for Exchange and Sharepoint servers is up and is going to cost us £5k!

Any advice would be great.

I wouldn't use Exchange if it didn't have AV on it. Just because you have AV at the perimeter doesn't mean an infected message can't get into your server. You should have AV on every server managing email, as well as on the desktop. And you should have file level AV on every server, including Exchange servers, and on every desktop.
