I have donated an old and not very powerful PC to an old lady who wanted to be able to send emails. The problem is that if I install a virus checker the PC crawls along so slowly that she will probably have died of old age before she gets to send one. I have tried AVG but PC is too slow. Can anyone suggest a virus checker which will protect her but be very low on system usage.

AVG shows as having quite a low overhead in the scheme of things: chart.

Alternatively you could set her up with a web-based free email that scans for viruses but permits POP3 access (eg Google) and some low-overhead spyware prevention such as SpywareBlaster
and maybe SpywareGuard

Or would she be comfortable with a non-Windows OS that has should show better performance on older hardware, eg ubuntu?
