Every time a backup job is run on our 7.3 backup exec, it seems to create numerous directories in the system32 directory, named vfw??. These files seem to be something to do with the virus checker in Backup Exec, as it won't allow me to delete the directories without first stopping the exec services.

Any Ideas?

Try the below link

Virus engine update for Backup Exec 7.3, 8.0 and 8.5

Before you apply the above, update the build of Backup Exec 7.3 to 2575, you can check the build in help/about.

If it is not at 2575, go to select patches and updates
Backup Exec
Backup Exec for NT/2000
change the filter to 7.3, English and download the build and post updates to bring it up to 2575

Actually, this issue was just fixed in the virus engine update release last month (november, 2002). The following Techfile, has a reference to a technote that describes this exact issue. Good luck and post back here if that fixes it for you... By the way, it doesn't list 7.x but I think it will work for that since the previous engine update was for both 7.x & 8.x. I think they just took out 7.x b/c its an unsupported release as its over 3 years old and there have been 3 new major releases since. Speaking of which, it may be time to consider upgrading... A lot has changed, and if you want to ever backup Win2k fully, you'll need an 8.x version.
